WINTER HOLBEN's Design for the Buoy Shack Earns Award

Restaurant Branding Recognized

Our design for the Buoy Shack in Kittery, Maine has been acknowledged with an award in the Signage and Environmental Graphics category by the 59th annual GDUSA American Graphic Design Awards.

With more than 14,000 entries, this project was selected as one of the few winners among an impressive field of fellow creative solutions for clients such as National Geographic, UPS, Baskin Robbins, and Tabasco.

“We believe that integrated design enhances the human experience within the built environment and thank GDUSA for this recognition,” says Principal and Founder, Elisa Winter Holben.

To establish the restaurant’s name and thoughtfully vibrant logo, WINTER HOLBEN collaborated with the owners of the open-air riverside restaurant property, which has become an iconic seacoast dining destination. Pulling from the colors and shapes of the restaurant’s own working waterfront buildings, an authentic, buoy-inspired visual identity was developed, one which now extends to signage, menus, social media and beyond.

The building design is a unique contemporary play on the buoy-adorned fishing shacks that dot the banks of our port city’s harbor, including the pier of Buoy Shack. Incorporating many of the modern architectural details WINTER HOLBEN is known for, the resulting concept combines textures and materials inspired by these seaside structures, with modern, unique details like translucent polycarbonate panels – which together create a one-of-a kind structure that will stand the test of time.

With this award, we are proud to be amongst a broad spectrum of work recognized by GDUSA that reflects the increasingly expansive ways in which design can create impactful experiences.
