The Foreside Inn: A place where thoughtful design meets modern convenience
There is no full-time staff and guests use self check-in and check-out.
Travelers seeking a home base while exploring the New Hampshire and Maine coasts have a new option.
The Foreside Inn, a 24-room boutique hotel, just opened in Kittery, Maine. Kittery, founded in 1647, is the oldest town in the state and located on the southern tip near the New Hampshire border.
The modern hotel with grey siding, dark roofs, and wood accents is spread across two side-by-side buildings, with 12 guest rooms in each one. There is no full-time staff and, in an effort to keep costs down for guests, no daily room cleaning services (though cleaning requests are granted for a fee).
Travelers use self check-in and check-out, and a personalized 24/7 concierge is available by text, email, or phone. Guests are emailed a personalized code that gives them access to the building’s entryway doors as well as their room, and the property is monitored by security cameras.
The Foreside Inn guests stay in king rooms, double queen rooms, and suites with kitchenettes. There are two accessible rooms on the ground level with direct access from the parking lot.
The rooms feature premium mattresses, refrigerators, Keurig coffee makers, microwaves, smart TVs, and tiled bathrooms. Many of them have private balconies. The hotel’s king suites and penthouses offer further amenities such as sitting areas with a sleeper sofa, a full-size refrigerator, stovetop, and dishwasher.
Kittery Foreside is a working waterfront full of shops, art studios, and restaurants. It is within walking distance of downtown Portsmouth, N.H. and a short drive from the Kittery outlets and local beaches.
The hotel is owned by Madbury Real Estate Ventures and was created by the local team of Winter Holben Design & Architecture in Kittery, Altus Engineering in Portsmouth, N.H., Woodburn & Associates Landscape Design in Newmarket, N.H., and JJ Welch Construction in Salem, Mass.

The hotel has free WiFi and on-site parking. There’s an outdoor area with seating. Pets are not allowed. There is no food offered at the hotel, but there are restaurants within walking distance.
Madbury Real Estate Ventures also owns The Rockport House in Rockport and co-owns The Coach House Inn in Salem.
The starting rate at The Foreside Inn is $150 in the off season and around $200 during peak season.
