3S Artspace

Portsmouth, NH

Contemporary Arts and Culture Venue

Opened in the Spring of 2015, 3S Artspace is the Seacoast’s first nonprofit contemporary arts venue offering a diverse experience of performance, music, art, and food. Brandon Holben, Project Architect (on behalf of McHenry Architecture), created the design vision and, working closely with many stakeholders, met a tight budget and oversaw the project through its completion. In addition to the adaptive reuse of a neglected industrial building, WINTER HOLBEN designed a integrated and unique environmental branding and wayfinding to complete the project. As ongoing supporters and partners WINTER HOLBEN also continued to provide donated design services including a donor recognition wall and design to add a retail store to the lobby.

Project features include:

  • Contemporary exterior design including corten siding and industrial style sunshading
  • Flexible lobby space for ticket and retail sales as well as additional art exhibits
  • Contemporary art gallery with high ceilings and garage doors
  • Full-service restaurant space with indoor and outdoor seating
  • Performance space adaptable for a wide range of events
