Thoughtful Multi-unit Renovation
Our firm was challenged with transforming a neglected Victorian-era residence into four luxury condos in a desirable neighborhood in downtown Exeter, New Hampshire. The WINTER HOLBEN team began with a feasibility study to configure the existing unit layouts and convert the carriage house into a living unit, followed by an exterior design study to repair and transform the exterior while preserving the historic character of the site. Each challenge presented its own opportunities which allowed the design team to expand on the improvements for the remodeling effort. WH focused on ensuring design efforts improved the look and feel of the interior and exterior as well as the energy efficiency of the building envelope. Additionally, the unit layouts and density were re-positioned creating a variety of unit types desired.
Building improvements included:
- Updating the building egress created the necessity for a new contemporary addition on the rear, allowing for a new informal entrance and stair for the residents.
- New high-performance windows, insulation, and mechanical units provide a sustainable energy retrofit, allowing the building better performance for future generations.
- Siding made from recycled fly ash provides a durable material with minimal maintenance.
- New wide plank hardwood flooring, trim, high-efficiency appliances, and LED lighting throughout adding beauty, durability, and reduced electrical demands.
