Gas Station Transformation
Located at a highly visible corner in downtown Portsmouth, the former Getty gas station had sat vacant and neglected for years. WINTER HOLBEN was engaged to transform this underutilized property into an exciting new community gathering spot that enhances the vibrant neighborhood and strengthens connectivity to nearby downtown Portsmouth. The project posed a unique adaptive reuse challenge: reimagining an outdated gas station into a fully functioning restaurant while preserving elements of the original structure.
Our design approach embraced the site’s existing character while infusing it with new purpose and energy. The original garage bay openings were retained and fitted with new overhead glass doors, creating a dynamic connection between indoor and outdoor space. Additional glazing was introduced throughout the building to bring in natural light and add visual interest to the façade. Two small yet efficient additions were designed to accommodate the commercial kitchen and restrooms, helping bring the structure up to modern restaurant standards. The original gas canopy was preserved, re-clad, and reimagined as a generous covered patio—welcoming guests, activating the corner, and providing valuable additional seating.
